Unlike some other uses of iron and steel, railway rails are subject to very high stresses and are made of very high quality steel.
It took many decades to improve the quality of the materials, including the change from iron to steel. Minor flaws in the steel that may pose no problems in other applications can lead to broken rails and dangerous derailments when used on railway tracks.
Rebar Steel
Rebar (short for reinforcing bar), collectively known as reinforcing steel and reinforcement steel, is a steel bar or mesh of steel wires used as a tension device in reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures to strengthen and hold the concrete in compression.
Concrete is strong under compression, but has weak tensile strength. Rebar significantly increases the tensile strength of the structure. Rebar surface is often patterned to form a better bond with the concrete. The most common type of rebar is carbon steel, typically consisting of hot-rolled round bars with deformation patterns.
Other readily available types include stainless steel, and composite sections made of glass fiber, carbon fiber, or basalt fiber.
Hot Rolled Steel Sheets
Hot rolling is a mill process which involves rolling the steel at a high temperature (typically at a temperature over 1700° F), which is above the steel’s recrystallization temperature.
When steel is above the recrystallization temperature, it can be shaped and formed easily, and the steel can be made in much larger sizes.
Hot rolled steel is typically cheaper than cold rolled steel due to the fact that it is often manufactured without any delays in the process, and therefore the reheating of the steel is not required (as it is with cold rolled).
When the steel cools off it will shrink slightly thus giving less control on the size and shape of the finished product when compared to cold rolled.
Uses: Hot rolled products like hot rolled steel bars are used in the welding and construction trades to make railroad tracks and I-beams
